WHY I AM INSPIRED BY BUILDINGS
Time calls to me in the quiet scenes that go unnoticed – nature's fickle and surprising turns, quiet morning light, bright colors on a forgotten home, a darkened window in an empty structure. What history are these buildings hiding, who occupied them, what the joys and sorrows of life of those who lived in them? When I paint I think about ghostly memories in these structures, and the passage of days, months and years.
I choose my medium based on my emotional connection with a structure. Watercolor is instinctual to me as brush, water and paint dance on the paper. The vibrant, lyrical transparency of water and paint take on their own life with little or no control from me. Oil painting is a more grounded medium, forcing me to think and connect with a structure on a deeper level. The layers of paint become layers of time as I build the thick, intense applications of the oil paint on the structure.
Nature's moods inspire me. I work to capture color variations and nature’s nuances by using watercolor or oil paint. Watercolor allows me to capture the moving, fleeting moment where time and nature interact in a lyrical fashion. Oil paint gives me the opportunity to use strong brush strokes and vibrant pigment to bring forth the light against dark, sensuous curves against strong, hard lines. I work to record a moment in time, that instant, where colors, nature and time move together in harmony.
Take a moment to pause and look at the intermingling of the colors I picked specifically to underscore the beauty of these special buildings, how the light and dark mingle on the surface, hard lines against sensuous markings that are used to honor the true beauty of a structure.
